Growing up as the daughter of James DeBarge has its advantages. Kristinia DeBarge (pronounced Kris-ti-nee-a), 19, was thrust into the entertainment world by her father while still in diapers. Now she’s making a splash with her debut single, “Goodbye,” a rendition of a classic. Running around L.A. and preparing for her upcoming tour, Kris chats with Rap Up about how she snagged a meeting with Babyface, collaborating with a top-tier singer-songwriter, and waving “goodbye” to romance, at least for now.

1. Had you heard the original song, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” before recording your single?
Yes, I was familiar with the original 1969 Steam version before we recorded it. I researched the song on the Internet with Babyface. He has been great to work with. (Read more)

Kristinia DeBarge took some time for an interview with Seventeen Magazine, where she gave some information about her upcoming (yet untitled) album. According to the interview Kristinia’s new album will be coming out in the second week of July and is still figuring out what the followup single for “Goodbye” will be. Some of the tracks that may be included in the album and that are considered for the second single are “Powerless“, “Sabotage” and a song that she says she hasn’t recorded yet called “Anti-Love“. The 98PXY’s Summer Jam is returning this year to Rochester, NY. The concert will be collecting several up-and-coming acts that have broken through in the past few months. With a lineage like hers, you’d think Kristinia would be feeling some pressure as she prepares for her album to hit stores this Summer. Instead she knows how to count her blessings. “I look at it as a bonus,” Kristinia tells SOHH. “A lot of people ask if it feels like there’s pressure there because it’s a lot to live up to. One of the prominent R&B family acts of the ’80s was Motown’s DeBarge. Now Kristinia DeBarge, daughter of founding member/keyboardist James, is taking the group’s musical legacy to new heights.

The 19-year-old recently entered the Billboard Hot 100 with her first single, “Goodbye.” Sampling Steam’s 1969 pop No. 1, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” the song is No. 30 on the tally and also appears in the latest Nivea ad campaign.

DeBarge is signed to Sodapop Music, a new label co-founded by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and industry veteran Jeff Burroughs. Her as-yet-untitled album is scheduled for a summer release through Island Def Jam. (Read more)

When 12 year-old Kristinia DeBarge first revealed to her musician father that she too wanted to pursue music, he quickly put her claim to the test.

James DeBarge, the founding member and keyboardist of the chart-topping 80′s R&B family group, DeBarge, took his daughter into his studio that night to work on a duet. “We recorded ‘How I Feel Inside’ until 4 am,” says the younger DeBarge. “Before then, I didn’t know the pros and cons of a music career.
