One of the prominent R&B family acts of the ’80s was Motown’s DeBarge. Now Kristinia DeBarge, daughter of founding member/keyboardist James, is taking the group’s musical legacy to new heights.

The 19-year-old recently entered the Billboard Hot 100 with her first single, “Goodbye.” Sampling Steam’s 1969 pop No. 1, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye,” the song is No. 30 on the tally and also appears in the latest Nivea ad campaign.

DeBarge is signed to Sodapop Music, a new label co-founded by Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and industry veteran Jeff Burroughs. Her as-yet-untitled album is scheduled for a summer release through Island Def Jam. (Read more)

When 12 year-old Kristinia DeBarge first revealed to her musician father that she too wanted to pursue music, he quickly put her claim to the test.

James DeBarge, the founding member and keyboardist of the chart-topping 80′s R&B family group, DeBarge, took his daughter into his studio that night to work on a duet. “We recorded ‘How I Feel Inside’ until 4 am,” says the younger DeBarge. “Before then, I didn’t know the pros and cons of a music career. When we finished he asked me if I still wanted to do it, and I immediately said yes.” (Read more)

Back in the 1980s, the DeBarge family was music R&B music royalty: El DeBarge and his siblings James, Bunny and the rest were like a younger version of Michael Jackson and the Jackson family. But struggles with alcohol and drug abuse, as well as poor-performing albums and prison time for a couple of family members led to the family’s decline and fall as a recording group. Well, it’s been 20 years since the group broke up, but a young family member is now trying to make her mark in the music industry: 19-year-old Kristinia DeBarge, (pronounced kris-ti-NEE-a) daughter of James DeBarge (aka Janet Jackson’s first husband) has an album coming out sometime this summer via Sodapop Music, Babyface’s new record label. 19-year old Kristinia DeBarge launches her career with the anthemic upbeat smash “Goodbye,” her debut single, now hitting at pop radio weeks before the official April 27th impact date. Powerhouse stations such as WKTU (New York), WKQI (Detroit), Z100 (New York), (KHKS) Dallas and WKSC (Chicago) were the first to get on board, with many majors quickly following suit. In addition, Nivea had committed to licensing the new hit smash “GoodBye” as the theme song for their new Network TV Campaign. “GoodBye” is featured in both :15 & :30 spots that began April 6 and runs through July 13th.
